One day I found on the presentation table, four big books around 700 pages each. The title ? Outlander (published in the United Kingdom as Cross Stitch) by the american author, Diana Gabaldon. I bought it and began a long serie of sleepless weeks !

I spent those weeks in the past (it's not really original for a history student...), but not my french or canadian past. The Scotland past with two loveable characters : Jamie Fraser and Claire Beauchamp Randall.

The story

After separation by their work in World War II, British Army nurse Claire Randall and her husband Frank, a history professor, go on a second honeymoon to Inverness. Franck seeks informations about his ancestor, Jack Randall, Black Jack Randall, a British Army Redcoat who was stationed in the Highlands during the 1740's.

One day, Claire goes plant-gathering near standind stones on the hill of Craigh na Dun. She finds herself propelled into the 18th century (1743) just a few years before Culloden Battle which will see the end of the Scottish clans... She encounters Frank's ancestor, Captain Jack Randall, but not for her pleasure, and a young redhead Highlander named Jamie MacTavish (Fraser)...

No concession at all

I am not going to tell you the whole story. You can find in : historical fiction based on real history events, romance, mystery, adventure, science fiction and fantasy.

Really well written, the books transport you in another world sometimes violent, sometimes soft, but really charming. Your heart will beat in rhythms with the adventures of this couple who crosses a small but so important part of Highlands rich history.

Diana Gabaldon does succeed the bet to make us discover this tragic part of Scotland's History with no concession for the British Redcoats. She is actually writing the book nine of Outlander series.

I read all the books several times and I can't wait until the next one !

In 2014, the American channel Starz began the diffusion of the American-British television drama series based on the historical novels. Developed by Ronald D Moore and produced by Sony picture Television and Left Bank Pictures for Starz, the show premiered on August 9th, 2014. It stars Caitriona Balfe as Claire Randall, and Sam Heughan as the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser.

The second season will begin april 9th on Starz and the dvd is released march 16th in France (currently not broadcast on tv ).

The books : Outlander (1991), which is published as Cross Stitch in the U.K., Dragon fly in Amber, Voyager, Drums of Autumn, The Fiery Cross, A breath of Snow and Ashes, An echo in the bone, Written in my own heart's blood. It is currently in reissue. Diana Gabaldon wrote also another books with differents characters of Outlander like Lord John.
